TEAM HILL NEWSLETTER CATCH UP EDITION 2024

Aug 3, 2024 | News | 0 comments

Firstly, apologies for our absence during 2023 but that was entirely due to the pressure of work and various things that kept cropping up. Hopefully we will do better during 2024 at keeping you all informed of what we have been up to!!!!

A quick resume. We held various events: – Afternoon Teas in April and December. Moorside Community Choir came along to entertain us.

Race Nights were held in February and September

A defibrillator was purchased and donated to Scott Woodhead at Sports Physio to arrange a site where it would have the greatest impact. After a lot of hard work due to rules and regulations re not siting on council property it was eventually put up in High Crompton Park on the external wall of the Bowling Club.

Once again, we held our Posh Dinner in October and it was good to see so many of our supporters, old and new there. It was a great night and I think everyone enjoyed listening to Victor Michael and his wife Hayley. We are holding a repeat performance on October 4th this year. Tickets will be available from May 1st!!

A couple of additional fund raisers were held to help a local family who were in need of some additional support

We supplied three wheelchairs for children whom the NHS were not able to assist.

We supplied craft items to the Children’s ward at the ROH and in addition to this we carried out various visits to the Children’s Outpatients to decorate the corridors and consulting rooms with vinyl stickers to make it a more friendly place for the children on their visits.

A couple of visits were made to Millenium Green where we helped to plant trees and further visits there enabled us to help keep the site tidy by carrying out some litter picking.

We also continued to support some elderly people within the community by carrying out their weekly shops. From shopping for 151 families during Covid we now have just one person remaining

As for the “Bossman,” Steve, he had an outstanding year which ended on a high when he was awarded “Teacher of the Year” (NW) in the Educate Awards and just a week after he was named as the “Most Loved Community Leader” by I Love Manchester Awards. Well done Steve we are so very proud of you.

These awards followed on a couple of months after Steve completed his most testing challenge to date. We are all so proud of him for completing his “14 Marathons Challenge”. 7 marathons Coast to Coast Costa Rica followed by 7 marathons down the Bartang Valley in Tajikistan. Very kindly the Mayor of Oldham, Zahid Chauhan, acknowledged Steve’s achievement and invited him to the Mayor’s Parlour to welcome him home and congratulate him. He presented Steve with a shield of the Coat of Arms of Oldham.

Before the time for celebrations came Steve had put in a lot of hard work to get to this point.

He had flown out of the UK on July 31st and apart from spending just 18 hrs at home enroute it was August 31st before he arrived home. He was a bit the worse for wear. Or rather his poor feet were but he could say “I DID IT”

HE DID IT.
THE FINAL STEPS HAD BEEN TAKEN

This is a very brief resume of the events we held during 2023 and we have already held a successful event on March 1st 2024. We held an Oomph Evening which was supported by over 100 people. Part of the Tyldesley Brass Band have formed an Oompah Band and they came to play for us on the evening. Our” kitchen angels” served up a variety of bratwurst, and sausages, to give the evening some authenticity. Bring on next year!!!

Easter saw Team Hill donate Easter Eggs to the Young Carers, The Childrens Ward, The Childrens Outpatients Dept, as well as a good supply of knitted teddies. Thank you to all our supporters who donated Easter Eggs and our knitters who keep us supplied with teddies and other knitted toys. Some of these knitters are as far away as Durham and Bromsgrove.

Steve has now decided on his challenge for August 2024. He sets off at the end of July to travel to Mongolia where he will run 5 marathons, after a few days sightseeing. He then returns home for a couple of days before setting out again, this time for Guatemala where he will climb 5 mountains. We will be with him in thought, I am sure. Good Luck Steve, stay safe.

Before his trip in August, he will once again be visiting Uganda in May/June for almost two weeks. While there he will run the Uganda Marathon, this year as Chairman of the International Board of Directors, and then he will spend a few days inspecting the projects that Team Hill has financed in the past year. I am sure he will return home with some further ideas as to how we can help.

We have a few dates pencilled in for the coming months so please put them in your diary.
